Factsheets produced by the ETC
To further its advocacy for public transport improvements, the ETC has produced a series of factsheets highlighing its priorities for the region:
- Federal funding of public transport;
- Upgrading the Belgrave / Lilydale line;
- Upgrading the Dandenong rail corridor;
- The Rowville rail line;
- The Doncaster rail line;
- Improvements to transport interchanges and stations;
- Further improvements to bus services and coordination.
The ETC believes that all levels of government have a role to play in the delivery of sustainable transport. Local government has the responsibility to advocate on behalf of its constituents, the State Government must fund the necessary infrastructure and reliable, frequent and readily services and the Federal Government should also provide funding for infrastructure.
Presenting the region’s priorities to the Premier
Based on the feedback received at the ETC’s recent public transport summit, a report of short-term priorities for Melbourne’s eastern was presented to the Premier.
The purpose of the submission is to provide the Government with a list of projects which
are:
- regional in their need or effect;
- able to be completed in the immediate to short term future;
- low to medium cost;
- easily implemented; and
- provide benefits to a wide-ranging cross section of the regional community.
The public transport patronage figure for Metropolitan Melbourne (Statistical Division) is 10.2%. With the exception of Monash and Whitehorse, the ETC are generally well below the average.
There is also a need to promote and assist “active” forms of transport being walking and cycling to promote healthier lifestyles and less reliance on cars.
The Eastern Transport Coalition calls on the Premier to deliver much needed public transport improvements in the eastern suburbs.
