ETC welcomes Federal Government’s transport focus

The Eastern Transport Coalition has welcomed last week’s comments by Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt that the government would consider funding public transport projects around Melbourne as part of a greater focus on sustainable cities and the built environment.

ETC Chairman, Cr Peter Lockwood said this was a significant shift in the government’s position on public transport and a welcome step forward.

“In recent years, the Federal Government has refused to contribute funding towards urban public transport projects, favouring road projects instead,’’ Cr Lockwood said.

“The ETC is delighted that the Federal Government appears to be broadening its focus and we look forward to working with the Federal Government on local projects, many of which are long overdue.

“If we really want to get Melbourne moving, ease congestion on our roads and deliver a first-class public transport system, both road and public transport deficiencies will need to be addressed.

“This will require all levels of government to work together and Federal funding will be critical.”

I’d like to see eastern councils extend an invitation to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to come to Melbourne’s east to discuss with them their public transport needs.
